"Hank It Up" is much more than just a song selection to be fun and catchy, it really is a trip through time. Written by industry titans Charlie Monk and Rick Huckaby, this song, I feel, is able to give the listener a small look at the transition of the Williams' music eras. I was lucky enough to have the song pitched to me, but when my team partnered up with veteran Nashville Producer Ted Hewitt for the project, I knew we had the potential for something special. Ted just recently had 5 #1 hits producing Curb recording artist Rodney Atkins. What he was able to do took me by surprise as he very subtly interjected the feeling of both Hank Sr. & Hank Jr. into the song as they are brought up lyrically. If you notice, the 1st verse is really about Hank Williams Sr., the original, the man who started it all. The lyrics have a very clever play on words as Hank's own songs are mentioned in the verse, but back behind it the whiney Steel Guitar plays away, resembling that of the time of Hank Sr. This continues through the 1st chorus, but then we hit a transition, the guitars seem to get heavier as we transition into the 2nd verse. Here comes Boceiphus. Guitar drives this verse played along with the classy organ typical of Hank Jr.'s style. We stay in this up until the solo where we bring things to present day, rocking, heavy guitars with huge drums. All the while by the time we make it to the end of the song, and all the sounds of are present, we wrap things up with the slick Steel Guitar lick, bringing us back to Hank Williams Sr., where we began. This song really is more than just a song that everyone who loves and respects the Williams' dynasty, it's a tribute to their originality in creating their own styles that have paved the way for today's Country music.
